...or: "How Peter Jackson's Mary-Sue ruined a perfectly good movie for me".
If the title didn't make it obvious already: BEWARE OF SPOILERS! I'm gonna try to keep this as un-spoilerish as possible, but I can't guarantee anything! Especially in the comments, if someone dares to write one ;D
So, it's the day after I've seen the second Hobbit movie, and I'm still not sure whether I like it or not. Sure, as a movie it was great, really. But as an adaption of Tolkien's original work....... I'm not sure what to say in this matter. I'm still madly in love with all the dwarves, and especially Fili and Kili - I totally have a thing for siblings and especially brothers who don't want to be separated and would do anything for the other. So a certain scene made me extremely happy in this movie. Nonetheless. Tauriel. Do I need to say more? I feel kinda sad for hating the character of Tauriel that much, because Evangeline Lilly is great, and she plays the role beautifully. Tauriel would be an amazing character if she'd be a character in another story! She just does not belong in a work of Tolkien. Tolkien's female characters just aren't like that, in my opinion (except for Eowyn, maybe, but that's another story). So, for me, Tauriel was just Peter Jackson's (or whoever is to blame for that) Mary-Sue-ish Own Chara who was created just for the purpose a goddamn love triangle with the movie's two hotties. It's one thing to insert Legolas in the movie (which is okay, since he does belong in Mirkwood), but to make him so out of character just because he needs to be jealous of a dwarf? Seriously? I'd probably really like the movie if there'd be a version without all the Tauriel-additions. Just cut out all the Tauriel scenes, and I'm sure the movie would still work out pretty fine... without the "obligatory" forced romance every movie seems to need...
Fun fact: After the movie ended, one of the first things a friend said to me was: "I've read a fanfiction just like that." And than went on to explain what happened in there, which in fact was pretty much what happened in the movie. And we're definitely not the only ones who said that The Desolation of Smaug was probably based on a fanfiction a 12-year old wrote. Pfft!
On another note, Bilbo (or, to be more specific, Martin Freeman's way of acting), as well as the dwarves and Gandalf were awesome in this movie. Also, the scenes with Smaug and Bilbo were amazing, too - even though I had the thought of Sherlock and John almost "flirting" with each other in my head most of the time and couldn't take the scenes serious anymore thanks to that... Smauglock, ladies and gentlemen!
Oh, and did I forget to mention the wonderful soundtrack? I love Howard Shore's soundtracks for the Hobbit (as well as LotR). This guy's music is simply amazing! I'm still not sure what to say about the song by Ed Sheeran, though. It just doesn't stick with me. I forget how the song is like after every goddamn time I've listened to it. Its lyrics are great, but the music just isn't special at all. But maybe I'm just biased, since I loved the first movie's "Song of the Lonely Mountain" way too much.
But what do you think? Am I the only one here who disliked the addition of the character of Tauriel so much? Maybe there are some hard-core fans amongst you who were actually as angry as most of the friends I went to see the movie with :')
